MAP Azure Blue Guide:
MAP Azure Blue or simply Azure was a light blue color with a purplish hue, developed primarily for use in the Mediterranean.
Azure Blue was used to paint the undersurfaces of RAF aircraft under the Desert scheme. This camouflage used Dark Earth and Middle Stone for the upper surfaces. In this scheme, Azure Blue replaced the lighter Sky Blue used previously.
Azure Blue was also used to paint the undersides of RAF Coastal Command aircraft operating in the Mediterranean. These planes were usually painted in a camouflage of Dark Slate Grey and Extra Dark Sea Grey. However, there was a special scheme in which Dark Mediterranean Blue and Light Mediterranean Blue were used to camouflage the upper surface.
However, US-built aircraft delivered under Lend-Lease directly for combat operations in the Mediterranean could have been painted with DuPont 71-062 Azure Blue, which was noticeably darker than the MAP shade and did not have such a distinct purple tint.
