RLM 02 RLM Gray Color Guide:
RLM 02 RLM-Grau was first put into service in 1936 according to L.Dv. 521/1.
Until 1941 RLM 02 RLM-Grau was used to paint the interiors and cockpits of Luftwaffe aircraft. Starting in November 1941, cockpits and all visible parts through the glass began to be painted in RLM 66 Schwarzgrau, all other parts continued to be painted in RLM 02 RLM-Grau.
RLM 02 RLM-Grau was also used for painting landing gear wells, bomb bays, flaps, etc. on Luftwaffe aircraft.
Single-color painting of Luftwaffe aircraft in the 1930s. In addition to fully RLM 02 painted aircraft at that time, there were also aircraft fully painted in silver as well as those fully painted in RLM 63 Hellgrau.
Some Luftwaffe prototype aircraft may have been entirely painted in RLM 02 even after the outbreak of World War II.
RLM 02 Gray was also used in the multi-color camouflage of Luftwaffe aircraft. Thus in 1940 during the Battle of Britain, fighters such as the Bf 109 and Bf 110 received camouflage on their upper surfaces consisting of RLM 71 Dunkelgrun and RLM 02 Grau patches. The lower surfaces of such aircraft were painted in RLM 65 Hellblau.
