RLM 78 Sky Blue Color Guide:
The RLM 78 Himmelblau was implemented in the November 1941 revision of the L.Dv. 521/1 when German authorities realized that desert aviation required exceptional camouflage.
RLM 78 Sky Blue was suggested for the under-surface camouflage of Luftwaffe aircraft operating in the Middle East. According to this scheme, the upper surfaces should be painted with RLM 79 Sandgelb with irregular mottles or blotches of RLM 80 Olivgrun.
RLM 78 Sky Blue was usually applied by aircraft factories to aircraft originally designed for desert operation. Notably, aircraft that retained the green RLM 70/ RLM 71 camouflage of regiments redeployed from European battlefields were not usually repainted with RLM 78 and still had the under surfaces painted with RLM 65 Hellblau.
