Description

The 1987 Topps Baseball set is one of the most instantly recognizable designs of all-time because of its wood-grain borders. The wood grain borders encasing a color photo featured on the card fronts is reminiscent of Topps classic 1962 baseball set. Its a very clean and simple design. The box used for the players photo has the top-left corner cut off where a team logo is located inside a circle. The bottom-right corner is similarly cut off giving the rectangular nameplate space to overlap. The checklist is also interesting. Card backs use a mostly yellow and blue theme. The top has the player name, position and card number in a strip. Below that is a large box with complete major and minor league stats as well as, space permitted, a short biography. A bottom strip has the players vital information. This set consists of 792 standard-size cards. The manager cards contain a team checklist on back. The key Rookie Cards are Barry Bonds, Will Clark, Bo Jackson, Barry Larkin and Rafael Palmeiro. It also has the first pack-inserted Topps cards of sluggers Barry Bonds and Jose Canseco. Some consider the Bonds to be a rookie card, however he was also in the 1986 Topps Traded Baseball box set.
