Description

Pinus heldreichii var. leucodermis (Bosnian Pine) is endemic to southern Europes higher elevations and can be found in all nations bordering the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Its a two-needled pine that looks a lot like the strident Austrian pine, but it grows slower, has stiff, sharp-pointed needles that are just 2-3 inches long, and has a more compact, symmetrical shape. The trees needles last for six years. Trees keep a tight pyramidal shape, especially when young, with a spread less than half their height. When mature, the 4-5-inch long cones are yellow-brown, but when initially produced in the spring, they are purplish-blue.
