Selection & Tanning of Leather:
Selecting leather is the most important step before manufacturing any ball as it has a paramount affect on the overall durability of the cricket ball. At Cricnix, we select the famous Pakistani cow leather. After selection, the first step in the manufacturing of any leather cricket ball is "Purification of Leather" where its ensured that all contaminants have been removed. After the purification process, tanning process starts and leather is dyed with either red or white color which is very close to the ICC approved colors. Also, then leather enters into the drying process for 24-48 hours.
We use alum tanning for our balls which is not harmful to human beings as all the contents used are mineral-based while most manufacturers use chromium contents which can cause tumor.
Moulding, Lamination & Machine Stitching:
Once the cutting of leather pieces takes place, stitching of leather pieces come into picture. With the help of stitching tools, operator takes four pieces of leather and joins them with thick thread. This stitching is rough in nature but strong in strength. After the stitching, two half piece of leather is ready for assembling. The inside of a Gold cricket ball is a "1 Layers of Twine & Portuguese Cork", which is covered by a leather case with a slightly raised sewn seam. The joints between the red or white leather pieces are stitched internally. In the final stage, the stitching operation is performed with the help of manual stitching tools. In a perfectly shaped ball, operator gives 65 to 70 nice looking threads which hold the ball assembly perfectly in order to give long lasting cricketing performance.
Pressing & Shaping:
Finally, the ball is put into a pressing machine in which manual press is applied to get the perfect round shape of ball. The tool which is used in this operation is hand machine tools which consist of upper and lower jaw with two half piece steel parts. Ball is placed in between two jaws and operator applied the pressure on ball to get the perfect shape.
Lacquering & Stamping:
Once pressing is completed, polishing operation takes place to get the ball shining. Remember, shining of the ball enables the ball to swing early on. The Cricnix stamp is then placed on the balls and then these are then packed and ready to play!
Leather Cricket Ball is an important part of any type of Cricket format. A perfectly shaped and quality Cricket ball gives the much needed balance between bat and ball which makes the sport interesting to watch and play.
