Description

The calibrated Mitutoyo 500-170-30CAL Digimatic caliper is for use in harsh workshop conditions. This caliper has a measurement range of 0 to 4" (0 to 100mm), resolution of 0.0005" (0.01mm), and an accuracy of + or - 0.001". The LCD screen displays in inches and metric units. This unit has thumb roller and Absolute electrostatic capacitance type linear encoder for accurate measurements and a 0.75", round, depth bar. Functions offered by this model include absolute measurement, incremental measurement, scale contamination alert (provided by the Advanced Onsite Sensor (AOS), and low-voltage alert. Mitutoyo calibrated tools include a Certificate of Calibration that provides evidence that the tool has been calibrated and is within allowable error specifications. Mitutoyo calibrated tools are certified by Mitutoyos American Association for Laboratory Accreditation-accredited calibration laboratory (A2LA Certificate #750-01) to the International Organization for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC) 17025 International Standard for testing and calibration laboratories.

This caliper offers serial data output (using optional SPC cables with a data switch, sold separately), which increases speed and reliability of digital measurement records. This caliper also supports a data hold function (optional data hold unit sold separately). It has a battery life of approximately 3.5 years of normal use. This unit comes with an SR-44 battery and a fitted, plastic case.

Calipers measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They make inside, outside, depth, or step measurements, according to their type. Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, and machining. The simplest calipers have two legs to mark the two points and require a ruler to take the measurement. More complex calipers use two sets of jaws instead of legs and have up to two graduated scales. Vernier, dial, and digital calipers give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw, and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. The vernier caliper has a scale sliding parallel to the main scale for an additional, fractional reading to improve measurement precision. The dial caliper has a circular dial with a pointer on a toothed gear rack replacing the second vernier scale. As with the vernier, this second measurement is added to the reading from the main scale to obtain the result. The digital caliper takes a differential by zeroing the display at any point along the slide, with an LCD that displays a single value in English and/or metric units.

Mitutoyo manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and related systems. The company, founded in Tokyo in 1934, formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963 with headquarters in Aurora, IL.
