Joan Webster (Hiller) is a pragmatic, ambitious young woman who believes that money is the basis of earthly happiness. She is about to marry a wealthy industrialist, Robert Belinger, who is much older than her. Joan travels from her home in Manchester to the Hebrides, where her future husbands estate is located. Bad weather and thick fog prevent Miss Webster from reaching her goal. She is forced to wait out the bad weather on the Isle of Mull in the company of people whose customs and life were previously unknown to her. There, Joan meets naval officer Torquil McNeil (Livesey), who is also stranded on the Mall on his way home on a short vacation due to bad weather. In the morning, on their way to the bus station, they pass the ruins of Moi Castle. Joan wants to look inside, but McNeil refuses. He opens up to the girl in that he is the laird of local lands, and her future husband only rents an island from him. He also reports that some ancient curse associated with this castle gravitates over the MacNeil family. Mutual sympathy between young people is gradually increasing
