Anna Karenina is the wife of the tsarist official Karenin. While she is trying to talk her brother Stiva out of a depraved life, she falls in love with the dashing officer Count Vronsky. This immodest connection destroys her marriage and position in Russian society of the 19th century; she is even forbidden to see her own son Sergei, which ultimately leads to dire consequences.
