Legal Secretary Joan Graham falls in love with convicted Eddie Taylor and, with the help of her boss, secures his parole. Eddie then tries to start a middle-class life by marrying Joan and getting a job as a truck driver, which he soon loses again. When six people die in a brutal bank robbery, suspicion falls on Eddie. He is innocently sentenced to death.
Shortly before the execution, the real criminals are identified, after which Eddie is granted amnesty. Before he can officially report it, he breaks out of the holding cell with smuggled weapons. In the process, he accidentally kills the prison chaplain. He is looking for his wife, who is pregnant by him, and insists on accompanying him on his escape. Their child is born while driving in a stolen car. This accommodates Joan with her sister. Both try to get into Canada, but they are caught and shot by the police near the border.
