Description

Chinese ink painters and calligraphers usually use a unique kind of paper in their work -- Xuan paper, or "Xuan Zhi" in Chinese. Its soft, absorbent, pliable but teak-tough. As well as ink, the brush and inkstone, they are known as the Four Treasures of Study in Ancient Chinese history. Indeed many ancient Chinese books and paintings on Xuan Paper are still in good shape today.
The skill of papermaking, valued as a national treasure, has also proven to be an international one; it was listed as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage in 2009. Since then, in Jingxian County, Xuan papermaking has been taught in schools. Although producing paper by hand can be a pain-staking process, scores of artisans are happy to stick to it, maintain the fiber quality and, at the same time, keep the craft alive.
