History of the U.S. Nickel
The US nickels history spans from the introduction of the "half dime" in 1794 to the iconic Liberty Head, Buffalo, and Jefferson designs. The 1883 "V nickel" omission of "cents" led to counterfeiting issues. The Buffalo nickel, with its Native American and buffalo imagery, debuted in 1913. The Jefferson nickel, honoring Thomas Jefferson, was introduced in 1938, evolving over time. During WWII, the "War Nickel" appeared due to resource shortages. The Westward Journey series debuted in 2004.
