This Shankh is found in the Indian Ocean and surrounding areas. It was used by Hindu Deities. The sound produced by blowing shankh is called shankhnaad. Right from the olden days, shankh is blown at the time of worship in Hindu temples and homes. Shankhs are blown during the ritual of the Hindu aarti, puja, havan, yagya etc. when the light is offered to the deities. People use conch shells shankhs for jal-abhishek, offering water to the dieties, such as Shivling jal abhishek. The shankhs are also used to bathe statues of deities, especially Vishnu, and for ritual purification. The key attributes of Turbinella Pyrum are:

  1. Size: The conch shells of Turbinella Pyrum can be of a considerable size, with an average length ranging from 10 to 20 centimeters (4 to 8 inches). Some exceptionally large specimens can even reach up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) in length.
  2. Shape: The conch shells have a distinct elongated spiral shape, tapering gradually towards the apex. The spiral consists of several whorls, forming a pointed spire at the top.
  3. Color and Patterns: The outer surface of the shell is typically white to light yellow in color, often with intricate patterns of lighter or darker bands. These patterns can vary between individuals, giving each shell a unique appearance such as Gauri Shankar Shankhs.
  4. Sculpture and Ridges: The shell surface is adorned with fine spiral ridges and grooves, creating a sculptural texture. These ridges run parallel to the whorls and contribute to the overall aesthetic appeal of the shell.
  5. Aperture and Lip: The aperture, or the opening of the shell, is elongated and narrow. It is typically lined with a thick, flared lip, which can be smooth or slightly ridged.
  6. Weight: Turbinella pyrum conch shells can be from 100 grams to 2 Kgs. The weight of a shell depends on its size, thickness, and the amount of calcareous material it contains.
  7. Sound Production: The chank shell is famous for its resonance and has been used traditionally to create musical instruments such as trumpets or shankh. When blown into, it can produce a deep, resonant sound.
