Hockey under a retractable dome? Its true! Pittsburghs Mellon Arena, opened in 1961, is one of the most unique arenas ever built, and amazingly, is now the oldest facility still in use. Originally built as the home for the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, the building soon turned into the citys center of hockey, housing the AHL Hornets until the Penguins expansion franchise was awarded in 1967. After two decades of primarily atrocious hockey, Mario Lemieux arrived, and Mellon became one of the centers of the hockey universe! While it lacks the luxury suites and modern amenities of many newer arenas, Mellon has witnessed countless great moments in its history, including the back-to-back Stanley Cup Championship teams of 1990-91 and 1991-92.
