The Web Of Wyrd: The Web of Wyrd is a metaphor for fate and destiny derived from women’s (the Norns) spinning. As the individual fibers turn round the spindle, or are woven together as the warp and the woof, by the Norns at the foot of Yggdrasil, they become the thread of our lives, or so Norse mythology tells us. The Norns (Old Norse: norn, plural: nornir) in Norse mythology are female beings who rule the destiny of gods and men. They roughly correspond to other controllers of humans’ destiny, such as the Fates, elsewhere in European mythology. In Norse mythology and Viking belief, the Web of Wyrd was the matrix of fates. The Norns, who held the fates of all beings in the cosmos, bore the responsibilities to weave the fates of all beings and also the Web of Wyrd. In Old English, “Wyrd” was formed from the verb “weorþan” meaning “to come to pass”. Somehow, this represented the power of the word “Wyrd” to people today. Another interesting about the word “Wyrd” was that it was the feminine noun which possibly related to the Norns in Norse mythology. When it comes to the Web, it is mainly about the destiny and fates. Actually, the Web of Wyrd represented the past, the present, and the upcoming future. It worked as a Viking reminder that the deeds in the past would affect the present and what we did at the present time would affect our future. All the phases of our life were interconnected and impossible to separate.
