Natural Onion Skins

Shepherd Textiles Onion Peel Extract is made from the the skins of allium cepa, the common onion sold at the grocery store. Onion skins are rich in natural anthocyanin compounds, and when concentrated those compounds produce strong yellow and orange hues on natural fibers. Our onion peel extract is produced sustainably in India by collecting the discarded skins of yellow onions grown to sell at the market. It is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), and is appropriate for use on fabrics that will be labeled "organic."

Yellows, Oranges, and Browns

Onion skins produce a range of beautiful yellow and orange shades, from pale mustards to deep, ruddy orange-browns. Onion Peel Extract can be applied directly to natural fibers without a mordant, which makes it an excellent choice for beginning dyers or dyers who prefer an entirely natural process. Pre-mordanting the fiber with alum will produce deeper, stronger shades of yellow and orange, or the color can be shifted to olive green by using an iron mordant.

Dyes Up To a Pound

Shepherd Textiles Onion Peel Extract can produce strong shades using just 5% weight-of-fabric (WOF). One ounce of Shepherd Textiles Onion Peel Extract will dye up to a pound of yarn or fiber to a deep yellow, although the final color will depend on the fiber type and mordanting. For the deepest, most intense colors, dye the fabric once without any mordanting, then mordant it with alum and dye it again.
