Why are PVC pipe diameters larger than their named size?
PVC sizes get their name from the inner diameter of the PVC pipe (not the outside diameter) as they are nominal or in name only. If you add the thickness of the wall on each side of the pipe, the outside diameter of the PVC pipe will always be larger that the actual PVC size.
