Butterflies are considered to be the glory of nature. Because of their beauty, light flight and magical life cycle, many cultures have associated butterflies with spirits. This singular concept haunts legends. The Greek goddess of the soul, Psyche, was even depicted as possessing butterfly wings.
The metamorphosis of the butterfly begins with the caterpillar, which wraps itself in a cocoon, and then becomes a butterfly, breaking out of the cocoon, the whole process also signifying the rebirth of new life.
In some belief systems, the caterpillar represents the continuation of life. The cocoon is equivalent to death. The butterfly, on the other hand, becomes the soul and flies to the next stage of spiritual development. It also signifies that a lost loved one will manifest into a butterfly and return to us again, a belief that brings solace to our hearts.
Butterflies representing dead ancestors or relatives are a common theme around the world. In the 16th century, in Ireland, it was even illegal to kill white butterflies because it was believed that they represented the soul of a deceased person.
