Sapphire belongs to the corundum family of minerals. Sapphire gets its name from two ancient terms, the Greek word sappheiros, and the Latin word sapphirus, both of which mean “blue.” Sapphires come in a variety of colors (including completely clear), but if a color is not specified, the word sapphire usually refers to the blue kind.

Another way to test the authenticity of your sapphire gemstone is a simple breath test. You can identify a real sapphire by quickly fogging it up. Track how long it takes the mist to disappear completely. If it is natural stone then the mist will disappear within a few seconds.

sapphires are also used in some non-ornamental applications, such as infrared optical components, high-durability windows, wristwatch crystals and movement bearings, and very thin electronic wafers, which are used as the insulating substrates of special-purpose solid-state electronics such as integrated circuits and GaN-based blue LEDs. Sapphire is the birthstone for September and the gem of the 45th anniversary. A sapphire jubilee occurs after 65 years.
