Junji Ito is a world renown Japanese horror mangaka. His work has developed a substantial cult following, with some deeming him a significant figure in recent horror iconography. Ito began to draw manga at the age of 4, taking inspiration from the works he read in magazines. He continued to draw as a hobby until he became a dental technician in 1984, where he struggled to find a balance between the two. In 1987, he submitted a short story to Monthly Halloween that won an honorable mention in the Kazuo Umezu Prize. This story ran for 13 years and was later serialized as Tomie.

Some of his most notable works include Tomie, a series chronicling an immortal girl who drives her stricken admirers to madness; Uzumaki, a three-volume series about a town obsessed with spirals; and Gyo, a two-volume story in which fish are controlled by a strain of sentient bacteria.

Junji Itos Uzumaki was nominated for an Eisner Award in 2003 and 2009. In 2019, Ito received his first Eisner Award for his manga adaptation of Mary Shelleys Frankenstein and received two more Eisner Awards for his works Remina and Venus in the Blind Spot in 2021. Several of his works were also adapted into the horror anime anthology series: Junji Ito Collection.

Tomie

Tomie was Junji Itos first published work. Followed by Tomie Part 2 and Tomie: Again, it was originally submitted to Monthly Halloween, a sh?jo magazine, in 1987. Tomie led to him winning the Kazuo Umezu award.

The manga centers around a mysterious, beautiful woman named Tomie Kawakami, identified by her sleek black hair and a beauty mark below her left eye. Tomie possesses an undisclosed power to make any man fall in love with her. She drives people into jealous rages that often lead to brutal acts of violence. With the ability to regenerate and spread her curse to other victims, she is essentially immortal.

The manga has been adapted into a live-action film series with nine installments to date. Tomie was also adapted for The Junji Ito Collection, a horror anime anthology series that premiered in 2018.

Uzumaki

Uzumaki first appeared as a serial in the weekly seinen manga magazine Big Comic Spirits from 1998 to 1999, and the chapters were later compiled into three tankobon volumes and published by Shogakukan. Viz Media published the English translated volumes in 2001. Uzumaki was nominated for an Eisner Award in 2003.

Uzumaki follows a high-school teenager, Kirie Goshima; her boyfriend, Shuichi Saito; and the citizens of the small, quiet Japanese town of Kurouzu-cho. The town is cursed by supernatural events involving spirals. As the story progresses, Kirie and Shuichi witness how the spiral curse affects the people around them, causing the citizens to become obsessed or paranoid about spirals.

An anime television series adaptation is scheduled to premiere in October 2022 in the United States on Adult Swims Toonami programming block.

Cat Diary: Yon & Mu

Junji Itos Cat Diary: Yon & Mu is an autobiographical seinen manga first appearing as a serial in the Japanese manga magazine Monthly Magazine Z in 2008. Publisher Kodansha compiled the ten installments into a bound volume and released it in 2009.

Junji Itos Cat Diary: Yon & Mu is about Itos life with his wife and two cats, Yon and Mu. Unlike most of his other works, this series is centered around Itos use of realism and exaggerated horror to elicit moments of comedy about the relationship between cats and their caregivers. It follows the adventures of J-kun, a horror manga artist as he adjusts to life with cats: Yon, whom his fiancee brings along to their new house, and Mu, a Norwegian Forest cat whom the couple adopts as a kitten.

The manga received favorable critical and commercial responses and debuted on The New York Timess weekly list of the ten best-selling manga volumes.
