3M Depth Marker Instructions

Prepare Surface Before Applying

APPLY ONLY TO: asphalt, unsealed concrete or paving bricks. 3M Depth Marker Graphics will not stick properly to loose, crumbling, contaminated, wet, or damp surfaces and are not designed to withstand wear of vehicular traffic.

SURFACE PREPARATION: 1. Scrap off any grease, gum, weeds, etc. Then brush/sweep area of particles. 2. Clean all exterior surfaces prior to application. 3. Ensure surface is dry prior to application.

APPLICATION: Apply 3M depth markers when temperature is expected to rise at least 70 degrees F. The warmer, the better the bond. Do not apply if temperature is below 50 degrees. Do not apply late in the day when temperatures are dropping.

TOOLS: Use a stiff, nylon bristled brush for applying the marker. The stiff bristles help work the graphic’s adhesive into the irregularities of the sidewalk surface. Do not use your hands because this entraps air.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: (If using 3M application kit, follow those directions.) 1. Position the graphic on the clean, dry surface. 2. You may use expansion joints to align the marker, but always position the graphic so none of its edges start or end on an expansion joint. 3. Bridge the Depth Marker over grouting, seams, stone edges, and expansion joints. DO NOT push the 3M Marker into those areas. 4. Peel back the liner to expose the adhesive and apply an edge to the surface. 5. Working from the center out to the edges of the marker, use the brush, firm pressure, and overlapping strokes. 6. Continue in this manner until the 3M marker is completely applied. 7. Now re-brush the edges and the corners. This ensures a good edge seal. Re-brush all the edges of the graphic, using firm, circular brush strokes. This works the adhesive into the application surface to provide better bonding.

CARE AND CLEANING: The surface of the 3M markers may pick up dirt. Use a stiff, nylon- bristled brush or a light-duty automatic cleaner. You may use a cleaning agent such as Simple Green. Do not use any cleaning agent that contains solvents. Never pressure wash the markers as this forces water under the graphic, causing the edges to lift and curl.

CAUTION: Best to apply 3M markers when temperature is 70 degrees F or above. To reduce the risk of tripping, remove and replace the entire Depth Marker if there is any lifting from the pedestrian surface.
