Add Color to Your Clay, Slip and Glazes

Our stains are a great way to add color to your clay, clay slip, glazes and under-glazes. They can be fired at all temperatures (low fire, mid fire, high fire). Combine stains to achieve a huge range of fascinating colors!

Many Stains to Choose From

The more stain you add to your glaze, dry clay, or slip, the darker the color will be. How much stain you add its ultimately up to each persons personal preferences. So for black, dark blues or greens, 5-10% of the total weight is usually a good place to start. For light colors, you should try 10-20%.

Super Easy to Use

Using ceramic stains is not difficult! So dont be intimidated, anyone can use them. Just mix the dry stain powder into your clay. Then wedge the clay and continue to add more stain until you achieve the desired look. For liquid applications, its even easier!

What Are Ceramic Stains?

Stains are fired blends of metal and ceramic oxides that have been reground into a fine powder. They are most popular at lower temperatures where colors tend to be brighter. However, most stains can also be used right up to the high fire range.

Benefits of Ceramic Stains:

  1. Stability: compared to coloring oxides, stains are chemically stable.
  2. Consistent Results: because of their stability, produce much more consistent and repeatable color than using raw oxide colors.
  3. Mixable: this is a key advantage of stains, the ability to target a specific color by mixing different stains to achieve the desired effect.

Stains can produce homogeneous color which can be less interesting than the variegated and speckled color effects that can be achieved with raw metal oxides like iron, cobalt, copper, etc. But it cannot be ignored that stains are far more consistent and reliable to use.

Finally, stains dont suspend well in water to create a paintable material, so it is necessary to mix them with a compatible and paintable glaze medium for doing brushwork.
