Description

Step 1- False Bottom

Josh’s Frogs False bottom (also known as LECA, for light expanded clay aggregate) is a great choice for the drainage layer in a vivarium. LECA is a natural product, made from heated clay. It retains moisture, provides lots of surface area for bacteria and plant roots to grow, and wicks water, which will help maintain humidity in a vivarium.

Step 2- Substrate Barrier

Joshs Frogs Substrate Barrier fits between the false bottom and ABG Mix layers, and ensures that no ABG Mix falls down into the false bottom, disrupting water flow. Joshs Frogs Substrate Barrier also prevents a clogged false bottom and the wicking of water from the false bottom into the other naturalistic vivarium substrate layers.

Step 3- ABG

Josh’s Frogs ABG Mix is the perfect blend for growing tropical plants both in the home and in bioactive vivariums. Our mix is the original ABG Mix developed by the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Each bag is a precise mixture of charcoal, milled sphagnum moss, fir bark, tree fern, and peat. The mixture creates the perfect balance between retaining moisture and proper drainage; it can last for several years if used properly!

Step 4- Sphagnum Moss

Joshs Frogs Chilean Sphagnum Moss keeps the substrate from drying out too fast and keeps the substrate from sticking to the frogs or other inhabitants.

Setting Up a Bioactive Vivarium

The modern living vivarium can seem like a complicated ? the most puzzling part being what is traditionally not the focus: the lower strata. A variety of materials are used as substrate in order to provide a climate that promotes both the health of the plants and frogs.

ABG Mix works best when used in conjunction with False Bottom, Substrate Barrier, Sphagnum Moss, and Leaf Litter.

Adding Live Plants

Plants in a vivarium help carry moisture from the lower portions of the tank to the airspace of the vivarium. They also create oxygen and help to break down the waste in the tank. Possibly the most important purpose they serve in the vivarium is to provide hiding places and help bring a natural feel to the tank for the inhabitants.

Adding a Clean up Crew

Microfauna are small insects that clean up waste, dead plant matter, and mold in the vivarium. Common microfauna include Springtails and Dwarf White Isopods.

Adding Pets

After letting plants and microfuana populations establish, the vivarium is ready for Dart Frogs, or other inhabitants that like low ventilation and high humidity. Joshs Frogs Bioactive Booster is a great way to speed up the cycling process!
