Why do horses need a grazing muzzle?
Founder (laminitis) is the 2nd largest killer in horses and the most common cause of chronic lameness. Overweight horses, “easy keepers,” and those with a prior laminitic episode are at higher risk. Laminitis can also occur in normal weight horses of any breed or age. The more you can limit your horses overgrazing, the healthier they will be.
What types of equines would get the most from a grazing muzzle?
Most horse owners have either had or known an “air fern” or “easy keeper" in their time; a horse who can’t even look at food without putting on weight. Horses, ponies, and donkeys who fit that description are at the top of the list of equines that would get the most out of a grazing muzzle. Even if they havent shown any signs, they could still be at risk for laminitis. A 2015 study in the Journal of the British Veterinary Association estimated that 10-25% of all horses have insulin resistance or pre-laminitic metabolic syndrome.
Why is under-eating just as bad as over-eating for horses?
In nature, horses graze and move constantly in herds. Continuous grazing keeps their digestive tracts healthy and stomach acids level, constant roaming and movement keeps them physically fit, and socializing with herdmates gives them the community they need for their mental health. Isolating a horse in a stall or dry lot is unnatural for them and can lead to digestive, physical, and mental health issues. However, if they are at risk for laminitis, turning them out in the pasture can be even worse. So what do you do? Consider a grazing muzzle! It allows horses to be out in the pasture with their friends in their most natural environment, while protecting them from the health consequences of over-eating.
