Your Awesome Possum House is easy to install!

Not unlike humans, with possums, its LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. Possums are creatures of opportunity. They dont build a home; they look for an existing location that suits their needs. An ideal location for the Awesome Possum House would be about 10-15 feet up in a large, old tree. Be sure to face it away from the prevailing wind and about 2 inches above a limb. Now, grab a partner! This house weighs almost 20lbs - so safety first. Youll also need a Phillips screwdriver - we recommend a cordless drill with a Phillips head bit. Take the screw out of the front of the house and lift the lid. Youll see 2 pre-drilled holes in the back of the house. Next take the 2 screws that are provided with your house and drill/screw them through the back of the house and into the tree. You may want to add some dry leaves or pine needles to the house to make ole Pete more comfortable. Then simply close the front cover and replace the screws. Move-in condition! "WELCOME" sign optional!

Possums are cleaner animals than you might think.

Much like cats, possums spend a lot of time grooming, preening and cleaning themselves. If theyre not sleeping or grubbing for their next meal, they will use their time on personal hygiene. They are even known to harvest a few bugs from their fur to munch on.

Possums have a unique tail!

A possums tail is basically akin to a human sporting a third arm or leg. Their tails are "prehensile" - meaning they dont just hang there and follow them around. They can carry things with them and use them to grasp things like tree limbs.

A Virginia Possum and her young.

The possum common to the US is a Virginia Possum. This is the only marsupial AND possum native to North America. The babies (called joeys), begin their lives after birth by camping out in mommys (called a "jill") pouch for a couple of weeks. They will stay close to mom for quite some time, hitching a ride on her back with the sibs.

Possums are very agile.

Perhaps possums should have been gymnasts! They are incredibly agile animals, even though they do not always appear to be that way. Possums have our equivalent of opposable thumbs. Add to that the prehensile tail and you have an expert tree climber, fence scaler and tight-rope walker!
