Pinus attenuata (Knobcone Pine) is an evergreen coniferous tree that may reach mature heights of 118 feet or be little more than a shrub when grown in bad conditions. It prefers rocky mountain soils that are dry. The crown is generally conical, while the stem is straight. When young, the bark is smooth, flaky, and gray-brown, eventually darkening to a dark gray-red-brown and furrowed into flat scaly ridges. The twigs are reddish-brown in color and are frequently resinous.
