It provides the recommended 3” WC to 6” WC (water column) pressure necessary to have robust flames while preventing the whistling sound too high of pressure causes.
●3” WC to 6” WC OUTPUT - This adjustable natural gas regulator reduces line pressure from 1/2 psi (approximately 14" WC) to the range of 3” water column to 5” water column which is the recommended pressure for gas fire pits. Water Column (WC) is a measurement of pressure common in the gas industry. It is the pressure necessary to raise water in a column by a specified height. For comparison 27” WC is equal to 1.0 psi.
●PREVENTS WHISTLING IN GAS FIRE PITS - The most common cause of a whistling sound coming from a natural gas fire pit or fireplace is too high of gas pressure. By reducing the pressure with this regulator your key valve will no longer need to act as a pressure regulator preventing the whistling sound. The second likely cause is using a standard flex line ? be sure you’re using a whistle-free flex lines for your gas fire pit, fireplace, or grill.

How the Celestial Adjustable Natural Gas Regulator Works
Celestials 3" to 6" WC Adjustable Natural Gas Regulator
Exactly how does an adjustable gas regulator work?
A gas regulator controls the output pressure using a rubber diaphragm, which controls a valve. The diaphragm (#3 in the illustration) is located on the output side of the regulator. Gas flow is depicted by the blue arrows.
When output pressure is too high, the diaphragm “balloons up” causing the spring to compress and closing the valve to reduce the pressure. When the pressure is too low, the diaphragm relaxes allowing the spring to release and open the valve to let more gas in.
Natural gas regulators provide a fixed output pressure (which can be adjusted in some models). The flame height on a gas fire pit or fireplace is adjusted by using a ball valve, commonly called a key valve.

How to Measure NPT Thread Sizes for Your Natural Gas Fire Pit or Fireplace
The Celestial natural gas regulator has 1/2" NPT threads for both the input and output. The 1/2" NPT is a standard thread size for most natural gas fireplaces, grills and fire pits. However, keep in mind that the threads actually measure approximately 3/4". The 1/2" size in the name refers to the inside diameter of the pipe, which determines how much gas can flow. This component is categorized by the inside pipe diameter measurement.
To assist you in determining the thread size of your existing gas feed and appliances weve provided the chart above. The trick to properly determining your pipe size and thread type is to be aware that NPT has tapered threads and will measure significantly larger than the named size.
