When topdressing your lawn, you only need to spread ¼ to ½ of an inch of compost over the grass. Compost is one of the best top dressings for your lawn, as it helps digest organic matter and release nutrients into your soil.
As the compost works its way down into your soil, it digests thatch and helps aerate compacted soil that can otherwise restrict water and nutrient distribution throughout the soil.
Compost slowly releases nutrients over time and when combined with the lawn clippings that fall to the ground when you mow, can provide almost all of the nutrients your lawn needs to fuel an entire season’s worth of growth.
Peat Moss is one of the best seed-starting mediums around. Its most often used after spreading new grass seeds on your lawn. Peat Moss provides a layer of protection for grass seeds that prevents birds & animals from eating the seeds and keeps them from drying out in direct sunlight.
Peat Moss also does a fantastic job of improving seed germination, as it provides essential nutrients and retains water to promote healthy growth. By adding the additional layer, peat moss prevents soil compaction and reduces compost use by 33%.
However, be aware that peat moss has a low pH level, making it perfect for acid-loving plants, but not ideal for plants that need an alkaline or neutral soil pH
Topsoil typically contains sand, silt, clay and organic matter. Topsoil is often used for filling up raised beds, repairing eroded spots, filling in holes or protecting freshly laid grass seeds as they sprout. If youre growing grass, youll need at least 4-5 inches of topsoil.
Topsoil helps protect the roots of plants by locking in moisture and preventing evaporation, encouraging deep roots and countering erosion.
Topsoil also provides excellent drainage, which can help prevent your plants from drowning during heavy periods of rain.
Mulch is commonly used in gardens and flowerbeds to promote healthy plant growth and provide a more attractive, professional finish to your yard.
Mulch provides numerous benefits that are vital to maintaining healthy soil over time. One of the biggest benefits is the ability to retain moisture in the soil, encouraging earthworms to move in. This is critical as earthworms will dig tunnels that help bring air and water to your soil.
Many mulches also help protect against changes in temperature.

Trust Landzie for your lawn care needs this season.
After years of struggling to perfect our own lawns, weve developed a system to get your yard looking better than ever.
Landzie pushes for a healthy lawn by removing weeds before maintenance. Weeds can compete with your grass for nutrients, sunlight, and water, leaving your lawn weak and vulnerable to disease. They can also harbor pests and diseases that can spread to your grass, making it patchy and unattractive.
Removing weeds with the Landzie Weeder will ensure that your grass receives all the nutrients it needs to grow strong and healthy and prevent the spread of disease and pests. Its an essential step, especially before seeding or re-sodding your lawn.
Landzie recommends aerating your lawn during peak growing periods - namely early spring or fall for cool-season grasses, and late spring through early summer for warm-season grasses, as this will help the grass recover more quickly.
Aeration is key to combating soil compaction, which inhibits the flow of essential nutrients to your soil. A layer of compacted soil just 1/4 to 1/2 inches thick can make a significant difference in the health and beauty of your lawn. Aeration alleviates the compaction by creating holes down into the soil so that air, water and nutrients can reach grass roots.
Landzie has produced an extra-wide lawn level that makes this step a breeze.
Your Landzie lawn level will fill in any gaps and ensure the topsoil is evenly distributed throughout your lawn. It will flatten any bump and fill any holes in the ground, ensuring that your yard is flat, even, and uniform as it grows.
Use your Landzie Lawn and Garden Spreader to evenly distribute the topdressing youve selected on your lawn. Common selections of topsoil include compost, peat moss, topdressing, mulch, and more.
A layer of topdressing will help protect new grass seed from predators and adverse weather conditions, as well as provide essential nutrients and moisture retention for your lawn.
