Product Description

This is a restoration of the original Centennial Exposition Deck printed in 1876 and distributed at the Philadelphia Worlds Fair. It is thought to be the first deck that was made in conjunction with a fair. The deck is also know as the quadruplicate deck because it has indices in all 4 corners and the indices are 4 different colors; Spades (Black), Harts (Red), Diamonds (Yellow), Clubs (Blue). The pips on the cards are 2 colors red and black.

History of the 1876 Centennial Exposition Deck

In the 1870s there was a competition going on for market share of playing cards in the United States. Saladee came out with his patent to put indices in the corner of the cards to be able to fan the cards rather than look at the entire card to see what cards a player had. He let Samuel Hart use his patent to print cards with the indices. Andrew Dougherty received a patent to put a picture of a small card in the corners accomplishing the same outcome. He named them Triplicates. Victor Mauger wanted to stay at the forefront of innovation and market share, so he placed indices in all 4 corners rather than 2 calling his cards quadruplicates.
